Course Objectives:

At the end of the course, participants are able to:

  1. explain the importance of road works safety,
  2. identify the salient features of the Roadworks Safety Manual,
  3. plan, design and install necessary and appropriate signs and devises,
  4. recall the requirements of Department Order 56.
  5. enumerate the roles of a roadworks traffic controller.

Introduction

The idea of putting up signs in a road worksite equates to good communication between the road worker and the road user for the safety of both and the people nearby. Good communication between the road worker and the motorists requires that:

  • Signs are erected before work starts;
  • Signs are regularly checked for effectiveness e.g. maintained in position and kept clean so they remain readable;
  • Signs are removed when no longer required or when the work is finished.

Road Works Safety is one of the most important concern in the construction industry because accidents resulting from struck by heavy equipment or moving vehicles is second to fall.
