6.5. Types of Machine Guards
There are 4 general types of machine guards: fixed, interlocked, adjustable, and self-adjusting.
| Type | Safeguarding Action | Advantages | Issue |
| Fixed | Provides barrier | – May be customized according to requirement – Can be fabricated in-plant – Usually provides maximum protection – Needs lesser maintenance – Suits to high production, repetitive operations | – May block worker vision – Can be limited to specific operations – Adjustment/repair often require its removal, thereby necessitating other means of protection for maintenance personnel |
| Interlocked | Shuts off or disengages power and prevents starting of machine when guard is open | – Usually provides maximum protection – Allows access to machine for removing jams without removing fixed guards | – Requires careful adjustment and maintenance -Jams may be easy to disengage |
| Adjustable | Provides a barrier that may be adjusted according to requirement | – Can be constructed/adjusted to suit many specific applications | – Hands may enter danger area – Often require frequent maintenance/adjustment – May block worker vision |
| Self-adjusting | Provides a barrier that moves according to the size of the stock entering the danger area | – Off-the-shelf guards are often commercially available | – Does not always provide maximum protection – May block worker vision – Usually needs frequent maintenance and adjustment |
