6.5. Types of Machine Guards

There are 4 general types of machine guards: fixed, interlocked, adjustable, and self-adjusting.

– Requires careful adjustment and maintenance
-Jams may be easy to disengage  
AdjustableProvides a barrier that may be adjusted according to requirement  – Can be constructed/adjusted to suit many specific applications  – Hands may enter danger area
– Often require frequent maintenance/adjustment
– May block worker vision
Self-adjustingProvides a barrier that moves according to the size of the stock entering the danger area– Off-the-shelf guards are often commercially available  – Does not always provide maximum protection
– May block worker vision
– Usually needs frequent maintenance and adjustment
