Module 8. Performance Evaluation and Improvement

Introduction

A Designated Establishment needs to evaluate the energy performance and the effectiveness of the its energy management system to verify if requirements are fulfilled and if not, appropriate actions are taken. It needs to determine what needs to be monitored and measured including the action plans in achieving the energy objectives and targets, energy performance indicators, the characteristics of the significant energy use, and the actual against the expected energy consumption.

The organization shall investigate and respond to significant deviations in energy performance and energy management system. All of these are activities towards continually improving energy performance. The term “continually” implies the need ensure effective measurable improvements over time.

This indicates sustainability rather than one-time improvement of decreasing energy demand and energy bills.

This module covers 3 approaches used to conduct performance evaluation: evaluating compliance with legal and other requirements, internal audit and management review and 3 sessions on introducing approaches to help achieve the goal of continual improvement: corrective actions, energy audits and measurement and verification.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the module, participants are able to:

  • Develop a scheme to evaluate compliance to LORs;
  • Explain and apply the guidelines of energy management systems auditing;
  • Explain and apply management review as an approach to energy management and energy performance improvement
  • Explain the importance of corrective actions;
  • Discuss the value of energy audits to identify opportunities to improve energy performance;
  • Describe energy use and energy consumption to identify, quantify and report opportunities; and
  • Explain the importance of setting-up a method of measurement and verification to determine improvement of energy performance.
